THE LOST JIMMIE WHALEN *
This is an American fragment of a Canadian ballad that has to do with the death of a young lumberjack, Jimmie Whalen.
All alone as I strayed by the banks of the river, A-watching the moonbeams as the evening drew nighj All alone as I rambled I spied a fair damsel, A-weeping and wailing with many a sigh.
A-weeping for one who is now lying lowly, A-mourning for one who no mortal can save, As the foaming dark waters flow sadly about him, As onward they speed over young Jimmie's grave,
*From Franz L. Rickaby's Ballads and Songs of the Shanty-Boy (Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press).
